Asana

In our physical bodies we develop a balance of strength and flexibility.  We also learn to balance our effort.

Vinyasa:
Vinyasa, like many Sanskrit words, has multiple meanings, means "breath-synchronized movement," and Vinyasa Yoga is a series of poses that will move you through the power of inhaling and exhaling.  Vinyasa movements are smoothly flowing and almost dance-like, which explains why it is sometimes referred to as Vinyasa Flow or just Flow.  Vinyasa Yoga focuses on the journey between the postures, and linking the movement of the postures to the breath.

Pranayama

A Sanskrit word meaning "extension of the prana or breath" or more accurately, "extension of the life force".

Breath helps us to still the fluctuations of the mind and be more present in the unfolding of each moment.  We learn to be aware of the oscillating moods of breath.  Inhale-widening, elongation; exhale-steady, rooting and connecting.  Breath is always present.

Benefits of Pranayama:
  • Slows down the heart rate and blood pressure
  • Develops respiratory stamina
  • Detoxifies the lungs
  • Increases the oxygenation of the body
  • Develops capacity to withstand higher levels of carbon dioxide and that in turn activates certain inactive brain centres.
  • Improves blood circulation.
  • Longevity and overall well-being improve

But the most important benefit of Pranayama is to Gain Control over our Emotions. Breath is originating from the same source as mind. Control one, you control the other. Awarefulness of breath breaks many deep rooted habitual patterns of the mind. By Pranayama one can understand and prevent impending health issues. It's one of the most powerful tools as preventive medicine.
